About Anagrams

Anagrams is a free word finder game that runs in your browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. No download, no install, no sign-up.

You get a handful of scrambled letters, and your goal is to unscramble them into every hidden word. Each word slot on the board shows its length, and the puzzle is solved when the whole board is filled. Every answer is a common English word.

How to Play

  • Tap the letter tiles (or type on your keyboard) to build a word, then press Submit or Enter.
  • If the word is on the board, it fills in. Words are at least 4 letters long, and a letter tile can only be used once per word.
  • The board groups words by length, so the empty slots tell you what you are looking for.
  • Found them all? Your time joins your local best-times list.

Three difficulty levels change how many letters you get, how many words are hiding in them, and whether each word starts with a revealed letter. Best times are tracked separately for each.

Tips & Tricks

  • Find the long word first The longest slot is usually the word all the letters came from. Cracking it early makes the shorter words easier to spot.
  • Work from words you found Many answers are variations of each other. Found RATE? Try TEAR, HEART, or EARTH with the same letters.
  • Use common endings Endings like -ED, -ER and -ING, and starts like RE- or UN-, turn one found word into several.
  • Shuffle often A new arrangement of the same tiles makes your brain see different words. It is the single most effective button in the game.
  • Say the letters out loud Hearing letter pairs like TH, CH or ST often surfaces a word that staring at the tiles will not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a valid word?

Every answer comes from a list of common English words, so you will never need obscure dictionary words. Each puzzle shows exactly how many words there are to find and how long each one is.

Do I have to find every word?

Yes, the puzzle is complete when the whole board is filled. If you are stuck, the hint button reveals a letter, at the cost of a small time penalty.

Is the game free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up required.

Does my progress get saved?

Your current puzzle and best times are saved locally in your browser. They are tied to that browser profile, so clearing site data or switching devices will not bring them with you.

Are new puzzles added regularly?

Each new game builds a fresh puzzle in your browser from a large word list, so there is always another set of letters to unscramble.

A Short History of Anagrams

Rearranging letters to find new words is one of the oldest word games there is: the ancient Greeks played with anagrams, and medieval scholars hid names and messages in them. The modern find-every-word format took off with newspaper jumbles in the 1950s and has thrived ever since, from kitchen-table letter tiles to the word games on this site.
